Originally, I hadn't planned on LaX, due to my vacation starting the thursday after and it being just one day, etc...
However, now that my injury forced me to skip PP, I've changed my mind on LaX, and my plan is to attend/race. I'll be working till 4 on the saturday before and will drive straight there from work. Should be able to make it into town by about 8pm - maybe sooner if I leave work early. I was figuring on camping like last time, Hotel F-150.
Joe, JB, John, Kevin, Craig (both Criags) - you guys in for camping?
May have another new rider meet me there to give racing a try as well.
All of this is body-willing. My hip/back are a TON better today than even last Friday, and worlds better than memorial day when I looked (and felt) like a busted tree trunk. I plan to get out this sunday and run some buoys.

It is the same location as last year. The previous site in La Crosse is done for good since the city is hellbent on enforcing a No Wake Zone that it passed into law last spring...
The site is the Black River Beach (located on the Black River, not the Mississippi River).

So, that means that we've got the paved launch right next to the race site again - and no need for totes, if you've got a trailer you can back into the water...
Josh - any idea if trailer/RV camping would be allowed right at the site (in the parking lot)?

I would bet that as long as there are no tents this would not be a problem, but offically I would say no... So commonsense would need to prevail especially considering that the shore south of the landing has boat houses along it with people that live in them
And yeah, no tote needed there is a paved launch on site. It is probably the best part about the site.

If anyone wants to share a campsite at Pettibone, please let me know asap. Tent sites are still $19 plus tax. If memory serves, they allow 2 tents per site, and I'll be on my cot in the back of my F-150 again, so 3 of us could easily share a site. I also have a small generator now, so we'll have electricity if needed. However, it probably only holds enough gas to run 3 or 4 hours. If we need juice all night, I've got plenty of gas tanks from skis I've parted that I could rig up to it, so it can run all night.

The girl on the phone said they have a huge parking lot, and should be able to handle a lot of truck/trailer setups. Look forward to seeing everyone out there. I am planning on bringing a bunch of Venison sausage with cheese and crackers for everyone. Any other idea's...let me know.

FYI:
Pettibone Resort doesn't accept single night camping reservations (min 1 week is what they want), but they assured me that walk-ins won't be a problem as only 3 (out of several hundred sites) are booked for the saturday night before the race. $19 for a tent site, $33 if you want electricity.

Chopper
06-22-2009, 03:05 PM
In order for lines to be fuller this would require that people need to show up and race. Hell We'd have a hand full of X2 Vintage 650's on line but none of them are legal cause they don't have lanyards on them...
fox river pwc
06-23-2009, 07:25 AM
Is there even gonna be pre-race safety inspection at LaX this year? I ask, because we didn't have it there last year.
Besides, how much damage can a riderless and lanyardless 300# 39mph X2 do anyhow? I mean, it's not like a 900# 65mph GPR rock-crusher (with rider) with f'd up steering that can unexpectedly act like a drunken stevie wonder is driving it. Bwaaaaaaaahahahaha!!!
Anyhow, I know zig's got the stuff to convert them over to lanyards for around $75, I think??? Or, I've got some spare yami handlebar switch assemblies I could loan out for the race, but I'd need them back afterwards. I should be there on saturday a good 2 hours before sunset, or I could mail them. Just a thought...

$75 that is half of what I have into the whole X2...! I think that we have something figured out. Now the question is does one enter 4 classes for the day? Hum...
I would say that X2's are not super dangerous, but they also don't steer very well. If there is a line of X2's which there could be, it will be a totally magical Chitshow with monsterous leg drags at 10MPH!. Maybe even better than the full line of Tigersharks at the Lure in '03.

Technically speaking, everyone's idle is supposed to be turned down for the race. The problem is turning down the idle doesn't help when the throttle return spring breaks and the rider gets tossed before hitting the kill button. Then you have a WOT unguided missle (well, ummm, sort of ;)) on the mississippi. I think even if the fellow racers "sign off" on the lanyard thing, you still have the liability of everyone and everything else within reach of an X2's tank of gas. It's a tough decision, and it sucks, especially when we don't have a ton of racers and no one really wants to turn away any racers, if possible - and we all know the odds of an X2 w/o lanyard catastrophe are small, but what happens to GLW if a known safety issue is "ignored", and trouble occurs?

Not true, that rule was changed I believe in 2003. Here is the offical rule:
17.3.9 All watercraft, with the exception of those used during freestyle competition, must have a properly working, lanyard-type
engine stop switch installed. Modifications made to the lanyard-type engine stop switch, using tape, wire or any other
material whatsoever, that can be removed by the rider or pit crew during or immediately following a competition event are
not allowed. [u]Engines may idle at any time, provided that the lanyard is connected.</u>

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. I've always turned mine down for the race. Didn't know I didn't have to, just assumed it was a "standard" racing requirement, as I've had to do it in other motorsports.
I know with the 4 strokes/EFI skis, turning down the idle isn't a simple turn of a screw anyhow.

Perhaps, but it's only half the story in this case. I also have several riding friends that are welcome to ride any and all of my skis whenever they want, and I never hesitate to let people try my skis simply for the asking, iceracer included. Just got a room at the Days Inn... :( Guess I am lucky to have a room at all. EVERYTHING was booked! See ya'll there. Freestyle and Vintage 650. Hope some of you are duting off those 550s and 650s... I want a full line!
Anyone have a stock Kawi that they would lend or rent out for a race?? If there isn't many in the Vintage 650 class I may wanna run Pro-Am Stock or Vets.
