View Full Version : Need a piston, badly

Long story short, I need an orignal bore size, 81mm, OEM Yamaha 61x/62t piston - used is fine - as long as it's in good shape. Preferably, I need the type with the boost port hole already drilled in it, or I'll drill the hole myself. Without one, my sport spec blaster won't be running for pp. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Oh, it gets better for me as well now too.
First, I'm on my race SJ yesterday, which is running great after some new "tweaks". It's windy, and I'm ripping across the 1-2' chop on the lake when my drive coupler suddenly shatters. Luckily, a fisherman nearby (that I knew from HS, but hadn't seen since then) was willing to tow me the 2 miles back to my launch.
1 hour wasted, but at least I have the parts to fix it.
Second, I'm out riding my backup SJ, which has a fresh top end and some other changes, and I'm trying to get it jetted right. Suddenly, my low back starts hurting, real bad, and sharp pains unlike anything I've gotten from riding before. So, I stop riding and tried to start fixing my race ski.
Third, the pain becomes intense and wrenching isn't an option. I get up this am, still in a lot of pain, and look in the mirror and notice that my hips are about 2 inches to the left of center. Very bad! Called my chiro's emergency line, and I'm still waiting to hear back, so now I'm at work. Store is open 9:30-1:00 today, and we're gonna be swamped. Hope I can survive...
So, I know I can find the time this week to fix my race ski, but it's looking like my back may prevent all of it. In my current condition, I can't even wrench, much less ride. Hopefully, my chiro will see me today. That's my only real hope at this point.

Very ugly. On way to chiro now (wife driving). Hoping I can get snapped back into place quick. Pain is pretty intense. Just sneezed twice and it felt like I was getting kicked in the back.

I promise that what spencer did was worse than any of us... He is looking at a complete new motor. (they don't run when full of water)...
Nice work I must say. It was one of the more interesting teardowns I have done.

I guess misery loves company.
I'm still in a ton of pain today. Chiro seemed to think after he adjusted me yesterday that I'd need one or two more adjustments this week and I'd be fine to race.
Slight problem: I'm still hurting way too much right now to fix my ski or to even think about loading up my gear, and my hips are still visibly off to the left of center on me - like my torso/pelvis is basically dislocated. We'll see after another adjustment, but it's not looking likely for me this weekend. Only chance, realistically, would be if I felt way better by friday then used my day off on saturday to fix my ski just to show up on sunday. That's my best case scenario right now. However, as I've stated many times before, I race for fun. Wrenching/loading/racing in stupid pain doesn't seem too much like fun for me...

My stock coupler shattered in my SJ because my 2-stroke makes too much hp. I know I should have upgraded that coupler to billet years ago but just never did. The coupler that failed didn't know that it was being powered by a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke or an alien life form on steroids. All it knew was that it was asked to transfer too much power from the crankshaft to the pump, so the 18 year-old coupler finally gave up and died. The memorial service is being held this thursday. The new billet coupler set is already in my shop awaiting installation.
My blaster motor was a used, never rebuilt, never disassembled 62t motor that came from a raider that sucked sand in the cooling line and overheated - then sat for a couple years. All I did was pull the head, sand away some piston scuffs in the front bore, slap an o-ring head on it, and test compression. Both cylinders were equal at 172psi, so I threw it in the hull and ran it. Also added a new combo of 44 buckshots and mod b-pipe, so I knew jetting/tuning would be required. 1st set of jets were close, but not quite. Pulled the carbs to rejet, noticed that the base gasket had squished out a bit on the rear cylinder, then also noticed 4 of the 6 base bolts were loose. Decided to just replace base gasket, and that's when I found the piston damage below the rings. My own damn fault - not the 14 year-old engine's fault - for not just pulling that cylinder to thoroughly check the motor when I first pulled it from the raider. Luckily, since it is a 2-stroke, I was able to have the cylinder off in under 20 minutes. When my new piston arrives, I'll have the cylinder back on and everything back together in about an hour. Hopefully, I'll get another 14 years out of it then.
Sounds like spencer injested water which f'd up his ski. Looks like he should do what brandon mcmillan did and have eric rudedog install an rxp motor in his sxr for him, since 4-strokes run much better on water than 2-strokes do ;).
Thanks for the offer on the 750. My backup SJ would work for me too, but first my body needs to be repaired. We'll see...

More than 2 are out... Both of mine are down, Steve Kings vintage SXI is down, spencer's ski is down and Rod from steiger powersports has been rolling in a wheelchair with 2 broken legs since late March. He is down for a long time and has quite a bit of hardware in his legs.
Spencer told me he ingested a little water after his ski subbed... Well I guess the definition of a little is a "loose" term since I drained at least a half gallon from the pipe when it was removed, then when I pulled the cylinder, the cases were still full to the intake tracts with water and there was a bent rod that would not clear the crank to make a full rotation. Tearing down this ski is why both my skis have sat with out any work on either of them to attempt to make one of them functional for this weekend. But whatever, spencers crap is taken care of cleaned up and oiled to prevent anymore rust or damage. I have a very valid opionion of why this happened and how it could have been avoided but I'll leave that off of the forum.

Yeah, it wasnt the motors fault. I havent had the motor for long but it was the best running ski ive ever owned before I took it out jumping waves behind my grandpas yacht. It was basically my fault I never taped the big intake holes in the back of the hood and that I was joyriding a race boat.
But I guess I learned an expensive lesson and hope to be at the race this weekend somehow.

Well if you race the masters class and scott combines masters and vet you'll be able to race your open against my stock ski, since the stock ski the only thing that might get fixed in my garage. I'll probably only race Vet on saturday though.

Well, it's official, my left hip is dislocated and my L5 vertebrae is f'd.
Tried wrenching last night and snapped a tap off in one of my subshaft bushings, as I tried to do the work w/o pulling my motor. Now the motor has to come out.
I won't be riding anytime soon...

Yep, I admit I chimed in first. I honestly just didn't think/realize that pulling the head on your rxp was typical pm. PM on my 4-stroke suzuki DR650 is valve adjustments, but the head stays on. Suppose I could pull the head to look, but unless compression is down or there are funny valve train noises, I probably won't bother. My bad. Sorry...

Now that you mention that, I do remember during my original evaluation, with x-rays, in december, as my chiro looked closely and counted my lower vertebrae. I don't have an L6, but I know he looked closely at my x-rays and double-checked. One of my main issues was the angles between L5 L4 L3, and part of my adjustments have been working to correct that. Now I'm just hoping it didn't help cause my current issue.

take care of the back!!!!! the 4 stroke thing is i heard that seadoo was having some problems with the 04, 4 tech valves and they upgraded them to a stonger one.. so before i had a problem i upgraded,so i dont have a problem..i think i was somthing to do with not hard enough valve tips..and rounding them a little.. which as you guys might know is kinda common with big cam hi reving engines...i know it wasnt a big deal, i had the engine apart in less than a 1/2 hour... soooooo easy to work on its unreal..looks like it would be an issue but really is nice to work on... but i do work on airplanes for a living
