Anybody have any secret (legal and preferably non-prescription) recipes for reducing joint pain, specifically shoulder pain?

Thanks guys.

I've been dealing with some progressively-worse pain in my right shoulder (and sometimes loss of motion to the point where I could not lift my right arm over my head - which makes putting a shirt on real fun) for the past 5 years. Then, similar pain began in my left shoulder late last summer. I've always had a fairly high tolerance for pain, and I'm the kind of guy who never goes to the doctor, but it got to the point of unbearable last fall so I found a chiropractor I trusted. (Ask me about chiros that use the Gonstead method sometime, and I'll tell you how it can help different issues throughout your body w/o medication.) Literally, in 3-4 weeks of adjustments, the new pain in my left shoulder was gone and my right shoulder pain was 90% gone. I had pain relief I hadn't had in many years. However, after just getting out an riding a few times recently, some pain came back right away. Not a lot, but enough for me to notice, and after being nearly pain-free all winter I want to keep it that way. So, besides seeing my chiro for my maintenance adjustments every 3 weeks, I'm looking for other things to try.

I've heard good things about the omega 3 and deep sea fish oil stuff joe. I'm glad to hear you've had good results with it. I'm thinking I'll give that a try asap - and getting more regular is a nice side effect too. Where/what exactly do you buy? How expensive is it?

Yep, exercise is key josh. I actually got an ab-rocket this winter, and used it, and got on my treadmill some as well - but still not nearly enough. Even with a little bit of exercise, compared to none whatsoever for the past 10 winters or so, I will say that it made me feel much better overall. I just wish I had more time for it. I know, I know, I need to make the time...

I've used aleve, too much, in the past couple years JB. Haven't in a good 6 months though. Part of why I went to the chiro was I was afraid I was taking too much, though it did work for me as well. Overall, my opinion about pain killers and chronic pain, like I've had, is that I'd rather fix the source of the pain, you know, not just the actual pain. I've also had arthritis, yep, no joke, in my hands since I was about 38. It REALLY hurts badly the day after I wrench on skis a bunch or ride hard, and the aleve helps that a lot. The real problem is when I wrench till late night the day before I'm gonna ride - makes it hard to hold on to the ski.

Anyhow, thanks for the good advice. See you on the line in old-man, errr, master ski...

Dude,

Screw the ab rocket and the treadmill. Get moving outside. Jogging, natural lifing movements and whatever. If jogging / running is difficult start slow walk / jog. Or get decent bike and start pedalling. The whole point of strong abs is for stabilization, how does one get stable when they are using a machine that stablizes them? I don't want to come off in a negative way, but it is reality. Take it from someone who has a congenital defect in their back and had to put in double time to overcome it. Yeah, and the Chiro is a good thing also. Get a swiss/stablity ball. They help a ton when used right. consistancy is also key here. Just doing something every so often is a waste of time. You must find the time to be consistant. Know anyone that can do serious fiberglass repair? I'm undertaking a huge glass job as soon as time permits.

So yeah, Exercise is the key here. Oh, I forgot the most important part. Proper recovery, stretching and sleep...

Yeah I know I should be doing some real exercise. I do like the ab rocket a lot though. Without it, my spine clunks and cracks a ton. With it, I do manage to get a good burn going at least. It hasn't gotten rid of my gut, but I can tell my core is much stronger, and even my chiro noticed a difference. I used to road race and sprint race bikes as a teenager - used to race on the velodrome by joe's house as a kid - but I drifted away from bikes as an adult. I know getting back on a bike would be the best thing for me. Time to go dust off my 15 year-old diamondback mountain bike...
