I'm not trying to stir up sh it here, I'm just reporting on what I was told and getting the word out so IF anyone needs/wants to work on their racing plans for 2009, at least you'll have this relevant info.
Anyhow, Pat Mell called me this morning and said, "In light of Scott's decision to drop out of the APBA that he (pat mell) would allow the wisconsin (region 4) racers to race for free at his regional races this season. So, if anyone wants to race for APBA highpoints, here's a way for them to do so." Specifically, we could enter the novice/amateur classes for free, but if you enter any of the pro-am classes that have a payout, you would have to chip in something to cover a portion of the payout expense (not sure how much that is yet).
I thanked him for the offer, and then I asked if wisconsin (region 4) racers could apply the money they had already spent on buying their race numbers to help pay for their APBA memberships instead, and he said he would look into that and get back to me, but he certainly said it was a possibility. (Refunds won't happen, but using the money some of us already spent buying numbers to pay for two memberships now is certainly better than nothing.)
Also, he's working on adding another race near Grand Rapids - currently set for August 1st and 2nd. Milwaukee to Grand Rapids is about 4 hours (last time I made that trip).
That's the news...

I guess deperate times mean desperate measures. To me it is not worth traveling a minimum of 8 hours for a regional race. I'll still end up attending at least one of the National Tour Stops and probably Nashville.
My suggestion to those who live in region 4 is to race in region 4. Supporting the tour that is close to home is the best thing one can do if they want to see the tour survive and grow.
As already seen there is a good balance (surf/flat/east/west) of races in the state this summer, show up and race.
Memberships are a mimimal expense, so don't let that sway you from the GLW tour. Besides, rumors are that there will be ways to save money this year on entries and expenses by staying closer to home.
For the record your IJSBA memebership includes an AWA memebership. AWA is on the forefront for keeping recreation area's open for PWC's. Last I checked the IJSBA membership is $50.00 for the year.
I do not want to discurrage anyone from traveling anywhere, I just wanted to point out the facts that we need to support our tour first. Besides racing anywhere is better than racing nowhere!

I agree w/chopper. Supporting our local tour still needs to be a priority. In no way am I suggesting that anyone should bail on any of scott's races.
I'm sure some will say this "free racing" offer by patrick is "underhanded", but I'm reserving judgment for now. When you look at the schedules, the two tours are fairly staggered, with just 2 conflicting weekends. What sucks is the two walled lake races are the only 2 conflicting weekends, but anyhow...
From my conversation with patrick, I got a sense that he was genuinely concerned for the racers that take highpoints seriously and wanted to offer them an option, but what do I know? Maybe this is a move brought on by desperation? Maybe I'm just a sucker? Like I said, I'm reserving judgment for the time being and just offering the info I have received.
In the meantime, I guess we all better go get our IJSBA cards pronto, hey?

Who cares about Highpoints. The only way that you can really do that well in them is to follow the tour anyhow. Which if that is the case you'll be doing that regardless of what is going on here in region 4 otherwise known as Wisconisn.

Well it is easy for us freestylers as the APBA hasn't had freestyle in the National Highpoints since the national tour disappeared in 03. Hell, the APBA doesn't even offer a class for us on what they now are calling the "National Tour"... Haven't in years. Glad to see we will once again have a tour to run on. Wish I had known this before we expanded the LXF tour again.
