So whos gonna be the first one out riding this year?

In Winona the Mississippi is 15%frozen in the main channel and all frozen in the backwaters.
I hope it gets warm and I can throw on the dry suit and go out about mid march for a quick test ride on the sxr.

So whens everyone else planning to make their first ride?

Ooh 45 degrees out tomorrow. Water temp it 34-35. If its not windy I think im throwin on the dry suit tomorrow. In the main channel pretty much all of the ice is gone.

I thought as long as you warm it up really slow youre fine? My dad advised me to wait a few weeks though. I guess ill wait it out, I wish I had something to put on my ski or something. Its killing me not being able to ride or mess with my ski!!!

A successful warm up doesn't change the fact that you're pumping frigid water into your motor. I've ridden in 34 degree water twice, but I just didn't ride very aggressively (no WOT) to avoid swelling the pistons while shrinking the cylinders - and more honestly - to avoid getting too wet. IMHO, riding when it's THAT cold isn't all that fun, but when I was more anxious to ride asap every spring, I did what I had to do, ya know???

Anyhow, I've ridden in lake michigan in october/november several times with water temps in the high 40s. However, that's been in 5-8' waves, and well-worth enduring the cold...

Oh, almost forgot, I did actually ride across 30-50 foot wide ice peninsulas one spring on the fox when it suddenly hit 60 one day in march, but most of the river, and all of lake tichigan, were still frozen.

Hopping up, onto, and across the ice is easy. What sucks is your scoop grate stuffs the pump with ice shavings as you slide across. Then, when you hit the water on the other side, you have no thrust/steering for a couple seconds, and you're guaranteed to get dunked in the frigid water.

Rode again today. Set up some buoys then went back to the boathouse to fill up and they were all a 1/4 mile downstream... The current was too fast for the size weights I was using for the buoys

I rode today. Fox River temp had to be near 60, and Lake Tichigan temp was a good 8-10 degrees colder, as usual, for this time of year. Had to work till 4, so I didn't make it in the water till 6 - long after the clouds had rolled in. Got a good hour and a half in. Just wore my shorty sleeved suit with dry jacket on top. Toasty :)...

Waiting to get a tach then im gonna tune in my water cooling on the pipe. Its a little off right now so I set it to dump a ton of water in so it doesnt hurt anything till I get a tach and temp guage. Then its buoy shreddin time!
