Had a hard time starting the sj today. Got it going then it died after 45 mins, but started up again, but it died and started back up three more time within a 15 min period. Now it won't start at all, turns over. Don't have a clue what it could be..Any suggestions?????
p.s. the ski was an old race ski from wi, #801(white lettering, blue background).

Pull the plugs and check for spark. Most common failure on old Yami's is the handlebar switches - which allow the starter to turn, but no spark.
What mods does it have?

Took it to a dealer and it started up for them. They said it had the wrong plugs in it. Don't know if that is really the problem or not. So going to pick it up and test it out again. It had a R&D ride plate, high compression heads and an impellar(forgot what kind). Plus he by-passed the fuel shut off switches and just made it without the resereve part.

Sounds like the dealer is feeding you a big bowl of crap. Based upon your description, your issue wasn't/isn't "wrong spark plugs". Odds are your issue is intermittent loss of spark (probably caused by the handlebar switch issue I already mentioned). So, the dealer gets the ski, it starts up fine for them, but they have to replace SOMETHING to justify charging you for their labor (all 5 minutes or so) - so they stick plugs in it and hand you the bill. AND, your intermittent spark issue still exists.
Whatever you do, do NOT pay the bill if they can't hand you these "wrong spark plugs" they removed from your ski. By law, they have to provide all your old/removed parts when a repair is performed.
Now, the problem is, if they already threw your old plugs away, they'll just grab some other old plugs lying around the shop and say they were the ones in your ski.
Moral of the story, don't take your old SJ to a dealer. Start learning how to do basic repairs yourself, or AT LEAST do some troubleshooting on your own before taking it to the dealer, or find a fellow enthusiast to help you with your SJ (I know a few of them :)).
As for bypassing the fuel selector, I'd like to know their explanation for that one??? Troubleshooting a bad fuel selector is EASY, and replacing or cleaning a clogged one is EASY as well. Also, it's nice to have the selector simply to turn the fuel off when trailering - as w/o it, fuel can sometimes get thru the carb(s) and flood the motor and cause your waterbox to explode when you arrive at the launch and start your ski.
Anyhow, I'm not trying to bark at you, but I don't want to see you get taken here. Send me a message if you want my cell number.

Thanks for the advice. Appreciate it. I'm going to go pick it up on Tuesday and try it out and see what happens. Yea, it would be nice to have fellow SJ buddies. As for the fuel selector switch, is there a way to get it back to the way it should be, with having an "on, off, reserve" switch. I don't want to have anything explode on me. My luck with jet skiis is pretty bad. Thanks again...Brian

You're welcome Brian. I got your pm, and sent you a reply with my cell and bb address.
If the dealer simply bypassed your fuel selector, we can reconnect it. If they removed it, then make sure they give it back to you.
Anyhow, you've got my cell number now. Feel free to call me while you're picking up the ski on Tuesday, if needed.

Oh the dealer didn't by pass the fuel selector, the previous owner did. Sorry I mixed that up. I looked for some parts to get it back the way it was, but hose seems so expensive from some places. Plus is there anything special that I need to do when hooking everything back up. I just got a blueprint picture that has all the parts from RIVA and am just going off of that.

All you should need is fuel line and zip ties. You can buy bulk fuel lines lots of place pretty cheap, or I have all the stuff you need. You should maybe just figure a time to get your ski by me. I can show you how to do everything yourself, or you can have me do it.
